The
Singel Canal is the most centrally located major canal. Next are
the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht and the Prinsengracht. To have
two adjoining state monuments on the Singel from the 17th and
18th century is unique of course. These two buildings are horizontally
connected and are the home of 3 spectacular apartments, 2 cosy
studio apartments and 1 great souterrain apartment. Each apartment
has its own entry from the central staircase in Singel 326. One
of the original names of the Singel was the Koningsgracht, the
Kings Canal.

Among
the tenants in the 18th century was a retired captain of the Dutch
East Indies Company with his housekeeper. Amsterdam was the nerve
centre of that famous multinational. On December 31st 1846 the
famous Domela
Nieuwenhuis
was born at Singel 328. Housing contracts on file with the city
go back as far as 1591. The two buildings were converted into
apartments by the current owner in 1987 thru 1988 The apartments
have been the home away from home for many expatriates ever since.
All
Amsterdam´s famous center has to offer is within walking
distance. From the apartment it is a five minute walk to the Amsterdam
Royal Palace on the Dam Square , the famous Flower Market, the
Anne Frankhuis, while the Leidse Plein, the Rembrandt Plein, the
Central Station, the major museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the
Van Gogh Museum etc. and the Vondel Park are no further then ten
to fifteen minutes on foot.
The
apartments are for rent for a minimum of two months and a maximum
of three years, however exceptions are made. Rent varies from
€ 990 for a studio apartment 40 m2 (440 sq. ft.) to €
5.250 for the largest apartment 300 m2 (3.300 sq. ft.). The rentals
do not include utilities.
Digital
TV reception and wireless Internet access are provided free of
charge for the three larger apartments . Bicycles are for rent
nearby. Home delivery of groceries etc. and all kinds of restaurant
food is available.

Other
than the obvious and the businesslike there is a lot more to tell
about the buildings, the apartments and the city of course. One
of the things that surprise most people from abroad that rent
an apartment in the centre of Amsterdam is the fact that you do
not need a car to get around. That does not mean that you take
a cab, it means you walk, bicycle, moped if you will. And if you
wish, a boat in the canal in front of your apartment is a legitimate
possibility. All the canals are part of the Amsterdam public harbour.
You can buy a boat, get a marina permit (very cheap, less than
€ 100,- a year) park the boat in front of your apartment
and go all over the Netherlands with it. The author of this site
has done that hundreds of times. The canals, summertime, early
evening while it stays light till 11 p.m., a cold bottle of white
wine, something to munch on and good company. That's magic.
In
the 19th century the apple market was across the water from Singel
326-328. Talking about boats, take a look at the picture below.
Obtained from the City Archives.

More
than anything else, the maritime history, Amsterdam's association
with the sea, has shaped the city. Literally. Many of the
canals have been filled and are now roads or tramways. Fortunately
the actual lay-out of the most important harbour in the world
in the 17th century has been saved. Take a look at any aerial
photo of the city and the message is clear. Or better yet, come
see it for yourself, your apartment is waiting for you!
